Make your world a better one

See a ground-breaking micro-finance scheme in action in Sri Lanka’s Ampara province - and be part of the action! Deakin University’s Global Citizenship Program is offering a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to apply your expertise to assist the inspiring work of the Aspirations Foundation.

For six years, the Colombo-based Aspirations Foundation has served Sri Lankan rural communities through a series of  school-based development projects. Lead by a Sri Lankan philanthropist, Development professionals and community organisers,  Aspirations Education combines modern development theory and an ethic of 'duty to community' to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for thousands of children in over 49 rural schools. The four principals, sustainability, accountability, integrity and efficiency drive an approach endorsed both by the United Nations, and Red Cross South Asia.

For two weeks in January 2015, selected students will be able to work alongside the community, Deakin staff and fellow students applying their skills, making friends and enjoying an incredible cross-cultural experience. It’s a rare opportunity to work with a community in need, learn about best-practice international development and put a standout international experience on your CV.

We invite second and third year Deakin students in the fields of: Business (Marketing and Logistics); Nursing; Information Technology; Education and TESOL; Civil engineering; Journalism and PR, International Development to register your interest today by emailing Deakin University's Global Student Mobility -

  6. We can learn a lot about Why Deep Learning Works by studying the properties of the layer weight matrices of pre-trained neural networks. And, hopefully, by doing this, we can get some insight into what a well trained DNN looks like–even without peaking at the training data.
